Three people, including two Chinese tourists, died on Tuesday evening during a traffic accident in Banteay Meanchey province’s O’Chrov district, police said.
Suth Hour, a district traffic police officer, yesterday said the accident happened at around 5pm along National Road 5 in O’Chrov’s Koub commune.
He said the Chinese tourists were travelling in a taxi from Siem Reap province to Poipet city when the vehicle crashed into a truck.
He identified the dead as Ye DanDan, 27, and Zhang Zuhui, 26, both Chinese nationals, and Lean Pov, 35, the taxi driver.
“The victims were Chinese tourists who hired the taxi at Siem Reap International Airport to travel to Poipet city,” Mr Hour said. “The taxi driver was speeding and overtook a car before hitting the back of the truck which was in front of both vehicles.
He noted that Ms Ye and Mr Zhang died on the spot while Mr Pov succumbed to serious injuries while being sent to hospital.
Mr Hour said that a couple who were in the truck suffered minor injuries and were sent to hospital for treatment.
“National Police officers took the bodies of the Chinese victims to Phnom Penh and are waiting for relatives to come to Cambodia to claim them,” he said. “Mr Pov’s body was sent to his relatives in Battambang province for a funeral.”
Mr Hour noted that both the badly-damaged taxi and the truck were towed to the district police station pending an investigation.
