Cambodia today marks Visak Bochea Day. On this day persons and personages, clerical and secular, all over the country, celebrate the birth, enlightenment, and death (nirvana) of Master Buddha.
One ceremony is held at Preah ReachTroap (Oudong Mountain), in Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province, under the presidency of Cambodia’s President of the Senate Say Chhum, and senior government officials.
To mark the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Sen took to Facebook to note that Buddhists in countries across the globe simultaneously mark the day, adding that the event was also meant to preserve and promote Buddhism, and offers a unifying occasion for people world-wide to pray for eternal peace and prosperity.
“On this special day, I and my wife [Bunrany Hun Sen] reverently wish that all monks and compatriots will be happy and prosperous.”
This year, the National Commission for the Evaluation of Prisoners has chosen 77 prison inmates who will either be pardoned or have their sentences reduced for Visak Bochea Day.
