Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a 27-year-old man over the trafficking of more than one kilogram of crystal meth, ecstasy and ketamine in the capital.
Major Sok Sarith, an Anti-Drug Trafficking Department police officer, identified the suspect as 27-year-old Orn Thy from Prek Pra commune in Phnom Penh’s Chbar Ampov district.
Maj Sarith said that the accused yesterday was charged with drug trafficking and is currently being held for questioning at the municipal court. He was arrested on Saturday.
Maj Sarith said police had earlier suspected Mr Thy of dealing drugs in the area and planned to crack down on the suspect. An undercover police officer, who posed as a drug dealer, contacted Mr Thy with the intention of buying one kilogram of crystal meth from the suspect.
The transaction was planned for Saturday in Prek Eng commune in Chbar Ampov district. However, Mr Thy noted that the location was not safe and instead arranged to meet at his rental house in Ponlear village in Prek Pra commune at 10pm on Saturday. The undercover officer agreed.
“When he sold the drugs to our undercover officer, police forces who were already on standby, surrounded his house and arrested him immediately,” Maj Sarith said.
Police seized over one kilogram of drugs, which consisted of 758.2 grams of crystal meth, 235.74 grams of ecstasy, 0.45 grams of ketamine, as well as three drug scales, one phone and other drug related tools from him.
