Speaking today (May 10) at the inauguration ceremony of Banteay Meanchey’s new governor, Om Reatrey, Interior Minister Sar Kheng told opposition groups to be careful and that the government will take legal action against any group that attempts to overthrow it by colour revolution.

Minister Kheng spoke of the demonstrations launched by CNRP supporters, after the disputed election results in July 2013, when he said, “Do not try it again! You failed in 2013.

“I see that as [an unsuccessful] colour revolution because protestors handed roses and lotuses to police and soldiers on duty to ensure safety. The flower gifts were meant to sway them to participate in the colour revolution, but our officers didn’t [take the bait].”

He noted that the government is now strengthening democracy and warned opposition groups not to destroy the existing democracy. He reminded the assembled that the country has successfully carried out many elections peacefully and violence free.

“People are free to have and express their opinions. It’s not completely like what a few have accused it to be. We ensure freedom of the press, the existence of multiple political parties, and so on. The government is also making reforms step by step.”
