Interior Minister Sar Kheng today called on all local authorities and relevant officials to go the ground to help victims of natural disasters, noting that more than 10 people were killed and thousands of homes were affected by storms so far this year.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the National Committee for Counter Trafficking at the ministry, Mr Kheng urged officials to give timely assistance to victims and also educate people on how to avoid danger during natural disasters especially storms.
“We must try our best to help our people on time, especially during this hot season with occasional storms which bring strong winds like the one in Battambang province on Monday which damaged more than 500 houses and injured some people,” he said.
Rainstorms and lightning also struck eight districts and two towns in Banteay Meanchey province on Sunday and Monday. Two people were killed in lightning strikes, two others were injured during the storms and 300 houses were damaged.
Keo Vy, a spokesman for the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), could not be reached for comment, but local media quoted him as saying on Monday that from January until April 22, there were 83 storms which hit Phnom Penh and all provinces except Kampot and Tbong Khmom.
He said 12 people were killed and 17 people were injured by lightning, adding that one person died, eight were hurt and 2,289 houses were damaged during the storms.
