After serving a Khmer New Year hiatus, the Metfone C-League, Cambodia’s premier domestic football competition, returned for its fourth weekend of football with Visakha claiming a thumping 4-0 win over Electricite du Cambodge at the Visakha Stadium on Saturday evening.

The mauling got underway in the 11th minute via North Korean attacker Pak Song-chol who delivered a superbly executed free-kick into the corner of the net. Going into the second half with a slender lead, Visakha turned on the pressure hitting three further goals. The second goal of the game was a wondrous free-kick, this time converted by Tith Dina. Greek attacker Evangelos Skraparas hit a third in the 66th minute before Japanese midfielder Masaaki Ideguchi completed the rout heading home a fourth in the with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Hok Sochivorn, Visakha coach, speaking after the game put the promising performance into perspective.

“The first half we created a few chances but not many because of the way they played, said Sochivorn. “It was hard to play our game. [My players] did not follow 100% in terms of organisation. But New Year games are important and it is a good result.”

However, Sochivorn was cautious considering the modest talents of their opposition.

“Comparing [EDC] to previous games and other teams is not right because they are predominantly a group of Khmer players. Against other teams they used foreign players, and in contrast to EDC, who had only Khmer players making it easier for us to play than against foreign players.”

Also on Saturday, African forward Timothy Okereke notched four goals to lead Angkor Tiger to a 6-0 win over Bati Academy U18s at the Bati National Training Center. Also on the scoresheet were Joichiro Sugiyama and captain Pov Phearath.

In Saturday’s opener, Asia Euro United narrowly secured three points with a 2-1 win at home to visiting Kirivong Sok Sen Chey.
