Police in Prey Veng province’s Svay Antor district on Saturday arrested a man suspected of hacking his father to death with an axe for stepping on and breaking his iPhone on Friday.
Captain Chuon Samnang, a district penal police officer, identified the suspect as Leng Huon, 23, and the father as Leng Sao, 50, both farmers living in the same house in Damrey Poun commune.
Cap Samnang said that at about 7pm on Friday the suspect and three friends were drinking beer and playing loud music in the house until around midnight.
He noted that when he became drunk Mr Huon dropped his iPhone on the ground near where he sat under the house.
Cap Samnang said that the father could not sleep because of the noise and walked out of this room, accidently stepping on the phone.
He said the suspect became angry and shouted at his father who in turn kicked him three times on the back.
Cap Samnang said Mr Huon then ran out to collect an axe and returned to hack Mr Sao several times causing him to die on the spot.
“The son was angry with the father for stepping on his phone and breaking it and also for kicking him,” he said. “He then took the axe and hacked his father on the head, neck and chest, instantly killing him.”
Cap Samnang said that after killing his father, the suspect fled from the house but was arrested by commune police at about 3am on Saturday.
He added that after his arrest, police seized an axe from him before taking him in for questioning at the district police office.
Cap Samnang said that Mr Huon was sent to the provincial police for more questioning yesterday.
Brigadier General Pov Chivi, Provincial General Crimes Department chief, yesterday said that the suspect has been accused of premeditated murder and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
He noted that Mr Huon is still being detained for questioning and will be sent to the provincial court today.
