Kampong Cham Provincial Court yesterday jailed a man suspected of killing and beheading an elderly woman and her grandchild at their home in Prey Chhor district last week.
Colonel Heng Vuthy, chief of the provincial general crimes department, yesterday identified the accused as 55-year-old Sim Kheng, a farmer who lived in Thmar Poun commune. Mr Kheng was arrested on Friday at his home.
Col Vuthy identified the victims as 65-year-old Vong Aun from Trapaing Boeng village and her granddaugther six-year-old Kheng Savoeun.
He said the accused was charged on Sunday with premeditated murder and could face a life sentence if convicted.
“He confessed to killing the victim because of an argument with Ms Aun over a land conflict in the village,” Col Vuthy said. “He plotted to kill her and her granddaughter while they were sleeping at their home.”
“He said he killed them by slashing their throats,” he added. “After killing them, he cut off their heads and buried them in a forest near the village to conceal his crime.”
According to deputy district police chief Major Bun Theng, the crime was reported by Ms Aun’s daughter who had visited Ms Aun’s home on Wednesday morning.
Maj Then said the daughter was worried about her family and called police over their disappearance.
He added that after it was reported, police scoured nearby forests and found the victims’ bodies 350 metres away from their home.
Maj Then noted that police were able to identify the suspect and make the arrest after neighbours revealed the land dispute.
Col Vuthy noted that the accused showed police where the victims’ heads were buried after his arrest. He is now in jail pending trial.
