Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court yesterday charged eight Chinese nationals who allegedly assaulted a countryman during a dispute over the sharing of revenue from a casino in Sihanoukville on Monday.

Brigadier General Kol Phally, provincial General Crimes Department chief, identified the accused as Ren Guo, 40, the chairman and main shareholder of the Pao Mai Casino, Wan Wei Zhou, 26, Wan Don, 38, Zhou Chao, 23, Yang Shu Ang, 27, Liu Guang Yu, 40, and Zhou Jie Xue, 25, all employees at the casino.

He identified the victim as Linda Xiang, 28, the casino’s general manager. Brig Gen Phally said the eight accused and victim held shares in the casino in Sihanoukville’s Buon commune.

He said the eight accused were charged with acts of intentional violence with aggravating circumstances and unauthorized holding weapons and that they each face up to six years in jail if convicted. They are now in prison pending trial.

Captain Doung Chea, a city penal police officer, said that at about 12.20am on Monday the eight accused and the victim got into an argument over their share of the revenue made by the casino.

He said that during the argument, the eight men, wielding steel rods and knives caught Mr Xiang and assaulted him, causing serious injuries.

“The eight men accused the victim of cheating them out of their fair share of the revenue,” Cap Chea said. “They caught him and beat him until he fell unconscious.”

He noted that while they were beating the victim, a Chinese colleague and friend of Mr Xiang alerted commune police.

Police immediately raided the casino and arrested the accused men.

Cap Chea said police seized six sticks, six long steel rods and a knife from them.

He added that police sent Mr Xiang to the provincial referral hospital where he is still receiving treatment.
