Prime Minister Hun Sen announced at the Government-Private Sector Forum (G-PSF) on Friday, March 29, that all citizens will be able to ride the trains from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville or Poipet and back free of charge from April 13 through April 17 – Khmer New Year.
“Khmer New Year is coming soon, I have requested [this] … because I promised that [we will not take money from] workers and other people for their travels [during the holidays].”
Khmer New Year is celebrated for three days, from April 14-16, and during that time Cambodians who work or live far from home generally visit relatives in their hometowns.
The premier is always attentive and considerate of the people’ s living standards, especially their difficulties in travelling home during the major festival days, like Khmer New Year and Pchum Ben.
For Khmer New Year in 2018 the Prime Minister provided 60 free buses to take people for their trips to and from the capital, and considered providing 200 free buses for Khmer New Year in 2019, in a bid to pressure bus companies to lower their prices during the holidays.
