Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday sentenced a man to 18 months in jail for posting doctored nude photos of a woman online and threatening to kill her after she spurned his romantic advances and blocked him on Facebook.

Judge Top Chhunheng identified him as Dorn Deth, 29, a former construction worker in Thailand who lived in Battambang province’s Kamrieng district.

“The court decided to sentence him to 18 months in prison,” he said. “The court also ordered him to pay 20 million riels [about $5, 000] to the plaintiff in this case.”

. .

Judge Chhunheng said that Mr Deth was charged with issuing a death threat and public defamation and also with pornography under article 39 of the Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation.

He noted that Mr Deth was arrested on November 21 last year in Pailin province by police from the Anti-Cyber Crimes Department.

Deputy prosecutor Sin Vireak said that in 2016, Mr Deth, who was then working and living in Thailand, got to know the victim Yin Samphors, 39, through Facebook.

He said that after chatting and contacting each other via Facebook’s messenger, Mr Deth asked Ms Samphors to become his lover but she refused because she was married and has three children.

Mr Vireak said that the victim later had Mr Deth’s Facebook’s account blocked and he became angry.

. .

He said Mr Deth then created another account using a fake name and requested Ms Samphors to become a friend.

Mr Vireak said that after the victim accepted the request, Mr Deth messaged her and threatened to kill her.

“Besides threatening to kill her, he superimposed the victim’s face on the body of a Korean girl and sent nude photos and sex clips to Ms Samphors,” he said. “He also sent the nude photos and clips to the victim’s other Facebook friends.”

Ms Samphors yesterday lauded the jail term handed down to Mr Deth but said the compensation was not commensurate with the damage to her reputation and honour.

She said that after the doctored nude photos and sex clips were posted online, her husband left her and their three children because he was angry with her and accused her of committing adultery.

. .

Mr Deth could not be contacted for comment yesterday.

However, during his trial on March 4, he admitted committing the offence.

“The reason why I threatened to kill her and defamed her honour was because I was angry with her for having my account blocked,” he told the court. “She also badly insulted me over messenger saying that I was just a labourer when I asked her to start a romantic relationship with me.”
