Police in Kampong Thom province said three children drowned on Monday as they were playing in a pond in Prasat Balaing district.
District chief of police Colonel Phal Phoeurn said one boy and two girls, four-years-old, drowned in a pond in Sala Visey commune.
Col Phoeurn said their parents did not know that the children had gone to play in the pond, located roughly 100 metres away from their village.
“The parents suspected that their children had gone to the pond, and as soon as the parents arrived at the pond at about 5pm, their children had already died,” he said, adding that the bodies of the children were returned to their parents for burial. “It is a sad thing that the children drowned like this. Their parents were careless.”
Deputy provincial chief of police Brigadier General Keo Sophal said drowning was common in the province and that police had to educate the public about the dangers of not supervising children.
“We disseminated information about drowning to people across the province, but cases still happen,” Brig Gen Sophal said. “I appeal to parents who have young children to please do not allow them to play without supervision. We do not want cases like this to occur.”
Last month, four young girls drowned in a pond in Banteay Meanchey province’s Phnom Srok district.
