During his visit, Mr Ricardo will attend a bilateral meeting of the Cambodia-Philippines joint military cooperation committee.

“The Philippine’s national defence deputy secretary will participate in the one-day bilateral meeting with General Neang Phat, secretary of state at the Ministry of National Defence,” ministry spokesman General Chhum Sucheat said.

He added that the Philippine delegation will go sightseeing in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap province.

Gen Sucheat said that the bilateral meeting will help to strengthen military cooperation between both countries.

“The bilateral meeting between both countries will help to strengthen security in the region and bolster the fight against terrorism and transnational crimes,” he noted.

Gen Sucheat added that the Philippine delegation’s schedule is subject to change depending on circumstances and he did not know if Mr Ricardo will sign any documents during his visit.

Last year, the Philippine government congratulated Cambodia for holding a peaceful and orderly election on July 29, saying that it is committed to working with the new government.

In a statement issued on August 5, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano said that the Philippine government and its people hailed Cambodia for its peaceful election.

“On behalf of President Rodrigo Duterte and the Filipino people, I wish to congratulate the Cambodian government and its people on the peaceful and orderly conduct of its recent national election,” said Mr Cayetano.

“The Philippines remains committed to working with Cambodia in further enhancing friendly ties and in deepening cooperation at the bilateral, regional, and international levels,” he added.
