Kampot Provincial Court yesterday charged and jailed a district police officer accused of shooting and injuring his wife’s female lover.
Major So Vuththoeun, deputy chief of Toek Chhou district police, identified the accused as Second Lieutenant Hok Cheng, chief of the district penal department.
Maj Vuththoeun identified the victim as Lay Ly, a beverage vendor from the same district.
He said Sec Lt Cheng has been charged with attempted murder. If convicted, the accused could be jailed for up to 15 years.
According Maj Vuththoeun, on Monday at about 12.30pm Ms Ly and was travelling with the wife of the accused on a motorbike in Mak Prang commune when they were spotted by Sec Lt Cheng.
The sighting prompted Sec Lt Cheng to suspect that his wife was having an affair with another woman and followed the two to a guesthouse in Kampot city.
“Sec Lt Cheng chased the victim, stopped her, pulled out a pistol from his waist and fired two bullets at the victim,” Maj Vuththoeun said. “One bullet hit her right knee, causing a serious injury.”
He said police officers nearby heard the shots, but Sec Lt Cheng had fled the scene by the time they responded.
Maj Vuththoeun said police sent the victim to a hospital for treatment, where she remains.
Sec Lt Cheng was later arrested at his home in Mak Prang commune at about 2pm. Police seized a pistol and several bullets from him.
Sec Lt Cheng is now in pre-trial detention.
