Phnom Penh Military Police on Monday arrested a military official working with the National Defence Ministry who is suspected of threatening to kill a police officer during an argument.
Major Ly Kimheng, a military police officer with the municipal military police, identified the military official as Colonel Chea Pichchenda, deputy chief of the ministry’s public relations office.
Maj Kimheng identified the police officer as Kiv Sitha, who works for Takhmao city police in Kandal province.
He said that on Monday at about 4pm Col Pichchenda and Maj Sith, who have been in dispute over the past five years, saw each other in Prampi Makara district and began arguing.
“During the argument, Col Pichchenda took out his handgun from his waist and pointed it at Maj Sitha, threatening to shoot him,” Maj Kimheng said. “However, a friend nearby held the handgun down in order to stop the shooting.”
He said that as the handgun was held down, Maj Sitha sprinted to grab the handgun of a colleague who was accompanying him.
Maj Sitha managed to fire three bullets, but none hit the mark.
“After firing three shots at Col Pichchenda, Maj Sitha fled,” Maj Kimheng said, noting that no one was injured.
After hearing the shots, military police officers who were nearby the scene rushed to intervene, where they arrested Col Pichchenda and seized his handgun.
Col Pichchenda is accused of attempted murder and was sent to the municipal military police headquarters.
He is expected to be sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court today.
Maj Kimheng said police are now looking to apprehend Maj Sitha and charge him with attempted murder and conducting a shooting spree.
