Siem Reap Provincial Court yesterday charged a woman who allegedly killed her husband after he accused her of being unfaithful in Banteay Srey district on Sunday.
Major Sok Piseth, a provincial military police officer, identified her as Beng Sokleap, 19, a farmer living in Tbeng commune, and the victim as Captain Sok Chheng, 24, a soldier who was working at the provincial military base.
He said that Ms Sokleap was charged with intentional murder and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted. She is now in prison pending trial.
Maj Piseth noted that the accused and the victim married a year ago and did not have children.
Second Lieutenant Bun Sokhom, commune deputy police chief, said that according to neighbours, at about 3pm on Sunday they heard Ms Sokleap and Cap Chheng arguing in their house in Srah Khvav village over an alleged affair.
He said that the victim had accused her of having an affair with a man she met on Facebook, but she denied it.
Sec Lt Sokhom noted that the neighbours did not intervene because the couple quarrelled frequently over the alleged affair.
He added that some neighbours said that during the argument they saw Cap Chheng beating and kicking his wife and that when she asked for a divorce he did not agree.
“She was angry at the victim for beating and kicking her,” Sec Lt Sokhom said. “She then took a cleaver and hacked him many times on his head, face and both thighs, causing serious injuries.”
“After hacking the victim, she fled from the house,” he added.
Sec Lt Sokhom said that after she fled, Cap Chheng shouted for help and a neigbour drove him by car to the provincial referral hospital.
He noted that the victim, however, died on the way to hospital and neighbours alerted police.
Sec Lt Sokhom said that police at about 4pm arrested Ms Sokleap at a relative’s house in the village.
He added that Cap Chheng’s body has been handed over to his family for a funeral.
