A trio of Cambodian fighters have been added to the 2019 fightcards of Asian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) behemoth ONE Championship.
Khon Sichan, Kong Sambo and will join ONE Championship: Call to Greatness on February 22 in Singapore, while Cambodian Top Team (CTT) talent Rin Saroth will take on Myanmar’s Tial Thang at ONE: Reign of Valor in Yangon, Myanmar on March 8.
PROKOUT Top Team and Team Phnom Penh MMA pugilist Sichan makes a return to the cage after an extended absence and will face Indonesia’s Rudy Augustian.
Sichan, a Khmer Warrior Challenge Champion, last fought at the Kuala Lumpur ONE: Visions of Victory in March last year earning a decision victory over Riski Umar.
In that contest, what was billed as a battle between two elite strikers soon turned into submissions being traded on the mat.
Umar got the first near finish when he locked up a triangle choke in the opening round. It looked as if it might put the Cambodian away, but to his credit, he toughed it out before finally wiggling free. Then, it was a reversal of fortunes in the second frame. Sichan took the action to the mat, where he then fished for a rear-naked choke to put Umar away.
The back-and-forth action continued into the final round, with Sichan landing another takedown before moving into the mount. It led to “King Kong” reversing positions just before the match came to an end.
The judges did not have an easy job after such a close affair, but ultimately the nod went to Sichan by split decision.
Meanwhile, Siem Reap-based Kong Sambo of Kingdom Fight Gym (KFG) will face China’s Zhang Chenglong in a ONE Super Series bantamweight contest. In March, Saroth is scheduled to meet Myanmar newcomer Tial Thang.
First up for the kingdom however, is a February 16th ONE showpiece in Bangkok, Thailand, where Nou Srey Pov and Lao Chetra are set to make their promotional debuts at ONE Championship: Clash Of Legends.
CTT fighter Nou Srey Pov will meet Thailand’s Rika “Tiny Doll” Ishige at Bangkok’s Impact Arena in what is likely to be the 22-year old’s toughest fight yet.
Also making his ONE Super Series debut will be 19-year old Lao Chetra who is set to face highly-rated Thai fighter Superlek Kiatmoo9. Chetra is regarded as a top Kun Khmer fighter holding the prestigious Bayon Stadium title thanks to his record of 120-21-5..
Superlek is a two-division Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai World Champion and a WBC Muay Thai World Champion, who has achieved more than 100 wins in his career so far. He was also named as his martial art’s best athlete by the Sports Authority of Thailand in 2012.
He boasts notable victories in the most prestigious venues in his homeland and on the international circuit, including multiple wins over Muangthai PKSaenchaimuaythaigym, a TKO of Jonathan Haggerty, and a defeat of Panpayak Jitmuangnon.
