PHNOM PENH, (Khmer Times) – The man who to claims to be the fifth and final Buddha is being investigated by the Ministry of Cult and Religion (MoCaR).

A group of people from the MoCaR, led by their minister Min Khin, and accompanied by the cabinet chief of the Supreme Patriarch of Cambodia, Chhoeng Bunchhea, , inspected the Wat Reachea Pagoda (Kandal province) on Sunday July 27.   They were following Facebook entries about the man claiming to be Buddha — Thean Vuthy.

Thean Vuthy declared himself as the final Buddha but he is not even a monk – just a scholar of sorts. He not only apotheosized himself, he also produced and sold photos and videos about his activities as the final Buddha.

A letter released on Monday July 28, by MoCaR stated said that Thean Vuthy commercializing himself is in opposition to Buddhist rules and regulations. These activities have trodden upon the dignity of Buddhism which is the state religion in Cambodia.

The spokesman of MoCaR, Seng Somony, couldn’t divulge any information about this case, because he was not available for interview. The president of the Independent Monks Network for Social Justice, Buth Bunthen, also declined to give more information, saying, “I was asked not to answer questions about this issue, as the authorities and MoCaR have already intervened.”

Chhoeng Bunchhea advised that the bogus Buddha, when apprehended, will be educated and rehabilitated – but if he relapses he will end up in jail.
