POLICE in Meanchey district are hunting a man suspected in the brutal killing of a motorbike taxi driver.

The murder took place at 7.30 pm on Sunday at Tracheak Chetr Guesthouse in Russey village in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district.

Captain Duong Rithy, a district police officer, identified the victim as Yan Choeun, 37, taxi motorbike driver, from Takeo province’s Angkor Borey district.

Mr Choeun’s body was found in a room by the owner of Tracheak Chetr Guesthouse at about 7 pm on Sunday, Cap Rithy said.

Cap Rithy noted that according to the owner, at about 5 pm on Sunday the victim drove his Honda C125 motorbike to the guesthouse with an unidentified man and stayed in room three on the third floor.

He said that at about 7.30pm, the unidentified man came down alone from the room, took Mr Choeun’s bike and drove it away.

Cap Rithy said when the suspect was walking the motorbike away from the parking lot, the guesthouse owner asked why he came alone, the suspect replied “I want to seek for a girl and bring her back to sleep with him [the victim] in the room.”

After the suspect was driving away, the guesthouse owner felt suspicious, and went straight to the room, Cap Rithy said.

He said the owner saw the victim dead in a pool of blood in the bathroom and alerted police.

“According to an examination of the victim’s body, the suspect killed the victim with a vegetable knife by slashing his throat nine times and caused him to die miserably in the bathroom,” Cap Rithy said. “After the killing, he left the vegetable knife at the place. He stole the victim’s property and fled.”

Colonel Teng Sino, Meanchey district police chief, yesterday said that according to police’s investigations and preliminary conclusion, it was a robbery case.

“This case was a robbery,” Colonel Sino said. “Maybe the suspect was a close friend of the victim. He lured the victim to stay at the guesthouse, killed him and robbed his motorbike.”

Col Sino said that the suspect has not yet been identified as police are now working on his case.

The victim’s body was handed over to his family for a funeral in Takeo province, Cap Rithy said.
