Police in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Mon district on Saturday arrested nine people over drug use and trafficking.
Major Vong Sothy, a police officer with the municipal anti-drug trafficking department, yesterday said that the nine were arrested at about 11pm during a raid on 168 Guesthouse in Tuol Tumpoung 1 commune.
He identified the men as Ly Vibol, 32; Eang Sokla, 31; Huot Seyha, 29; Heang Phally, 24; Suon Kampheak, 20; Liv Maya, 19; and Siev Sothona, 19.
Maj Sothy identified the women as Taing Chhunbuoy and Un Saveth, both aged 20.
He said the suspects are known drug distributors. Police knew the suspects were operating in the district after neighbours complained about people smoking drugs.
He said police found out where the suspects were after the owner of the guesthouse alerted police that the suspects were smoking drugs in a room.
“They were drug users and distributors,” Maj Sothy said. “They were arrested while they were smoking drugs inside the guesthouse room.”
Maj Sothy said that after their arrests, police seized two packages of methamphetamine weighing nearly 50 grams, a scale, a gun, four phones and other drug paraphernalia. He noted that all nine tested positive for drug use.
Maj Sothy said the suspects are still being questioned and will be sent to the municipal court today.
In another case, Municipal Military Police on Friday arrested 11 people for drug use and trafficking in the outskirts of the capital.
Captain Sath Sareth, a Sen Sok district military police officer, yesterday said that they were arrested at about 8.30pm after military police raided two rental houses in the district’s Phnom Penh Thmey commune.
“Our military police knew their hideout after neighbours reported that they had seen them smoking drugs in their rental houses,” he said. “After their arrests, military police seized eight small packages of crystal meth weighing nearly 25 grams, three phones and two motorbikes, as well as other drug paraphernalia.”
Cap Sareth said that all 11 tested positive for drug use, noting that the suspects are accused of drug use and trafficking and will be sent to the municipal court today.
