One girl was killed and another one was injured in a boat crash on the Tonle Sap river in Pursat province’s Kandieng district over the weekend.
Colonel Liv Seng Him, chief of district police, yesterday identified the deceased as 11-year old Ny Theary and the injured as her 14-year-old sister Ny Kunthea.
He identified the man who crashed into their boat as Nguyen Yangchong, a Vietnamese national living in Raing Til commune.
Col Seng Him said the crash occurred at about 7pm on Saturday after the two girls commandeered their family’s boat, headed north and collided head-on with Mr Nguyen, who was using his boat to transport fish.
“The victims were young. They were driving a boat and they must have gotten nervous and banked to the other side of the waterway and hit the other boat,” he said. “The 11-year-old was sitting in front of the boat – her head was hit and she fell into the water.”
“People nearby who saw what happened retrieved the girls, but unfortunately one died on the way to hospital,” Col Seng Him added.
He said that the body of Theary was handed to her family for a funeral, while police continue to investigate what happened, noting that the owner of the boat met with the family of the victims and offered compensation.
In August, two men in the provinces of Siem Reap and Kampong Thom were also killed in two separate boat crashes.
