VIENTIANE (NNN-KPL) – The Lao drug control and supervision police seized a huge shipment of drugs in northern Laos.
Following information provided by a suspect arrested earlier, the police and local authorities in Bokeo province were on the look out for a pick-up heading towards to a neighbouring country, through Tonpheung district of the province.
They intercepted the vehicle and upon a search, found over 5.7 million amphetamine tablets, wrapped in 2,882 packages, weighing 694 kg, and 180 blocks of heroin, weighing 72 kg.
According to deputy head of the Bokeo province Drug Control Department, Police Lt. Col. Houmphaeng Sisaketh, the driver, a Lao national from Nambak district, in Luang Prabang told the police that he had been promised a 3200 million kip (US$23,370) payment upon delivery of the shipment from Tonpheung district to a neighbouring country.
Lt Col Sisaketh said it was the largest haul of drugs seized by the Laotian police in recent years.
