Gun battle kills 18 including 8 police in Afghanistan

TALUQAN (Xinhua) – A total of 10 Taliban fighters and eight security personnel were killed during a gun battle in Khawja Ghar district of the northern Takhar province.

District governor Mohammad Omar said a group of Taliban insurgents attacked security checkpoints in Gortepa area of Khawja Ghar district early yesterday morning, triggering heavy gun battle which lasted for a few hours.

He said 10 rebels and eight security personnel were killed while over a dozen militants and six security personnel were injured in the clash.

Taliban militants who have adopted aggressive policy and are active in parts of the restive Takhar province have yet to comment on the incident.
