The second fishing season starts today, and will run until Jan 17, with the Fisheries Administration calling on prahok and pha’ak producers to buy fish in designated areas along the Tonle Sap River.
“Fishing areas along the Tonle Sap River in Phnom Penh and Kandal province are open from January 11 to January 17,” a statement from the Fisheries Administration noted.
Generally speaking, there are two high seasons for catching fish in Cambodia. One falls in December, and the other in January.
Vith Thearith, chief of the fisheries department in Kandal, said higher fish catches are expected than in the first season due to better weather conditions.
“Usually, the amount of fish caught in the second phase is higher than in the first one because the water level in the river allows fish to migrate from the Tonle Sap Lake,” Mr Thearith said.
