A multi-award winning Cambodian petanque athlete is in line for an international honour after being selected by The International World Games Association as a prospective recipient of its Athlete of the Year 2018 prize.

Ke Leng, a multiple world medallist and among Cambodia’s most decorated athletes, was nominated yesterday in the Boules category for the World Games Athlete of the Year 2018. She is among 25 athletes in the world who compete for the internationally accredited prize.

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The World Games are staged over a period of 11 days, with approximately 30 official sports in the programme.

Ke Leng is consistently in and around the podium at international competitions. Last October, Leng and Sreymom nabbed petanque gold medals at the Petanque World Championships (Trophée l’Equipe de pétanque), in Tours, France.

At 2017’s SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, the women’s petanque doubles team of Ke Leng and Ouk Sreymom defeated their Thai-duo Phantipha Wongchuvej and Pataratida Meepak 13-10 to claim gold – two of only four gold medals won by Cambodia at the regional showpiece.

Despite her stellar career in the sport and an ambassador for the kingdom, Leng, speaking after the National Games last year, said that at age 53 she was not sure how much longer she could continue to play. The kingdom is set to host the Petanque World Championships next year.

Voting for the Athlete of the Year 2018 prize will conclude on January 31st and you can cast your vote at the website of the organisation at: https://www.theworldgames.org. By Tuesday, the International Sport Association will feature the top 10 candidates for the next round.
