Essential has confirmed the ahead-of-its-time Essential PH-1 handset will be discontinued.
According to 9to5Google, Essential confirmed that it is out of stock of the PH-1 and will not be restocking the smartphone it first announced in May 2017.
“We are sold out of Essential Phone on essential.com and won’t be adding any new inventory,” a spokesperson said. “We are now hard at work on our next mobile product and will continue to sell accessories and provide speedy software updates and customer support to our existing community.”
The Essential Phone proved to be a revolutionary device garnering favourable reviews upon launch in late 2017. The Essential Phone was encased in a titanium and ceramic body, was among the first to pack an edge-to-edge display, and two rear cameras. It was also the first to feature a “notched display” which was later adopted by Apple and other smartphone manufacturers.
However, dogged by links to controversial Android co-founder Andy Rubin, the powerful device never garnered the widespread popularity it deserved.
