Police have apprehended one out of three Chinese nationals suspected of the robbery and attempted murder of a Chinese construction boss in Preah Sihanouk province.
Major Sok Sophal, an officer with the provincial police, identified the suspect as Zhang Hong, a Chinese national with no job who resided in Sihanoukville.
Maj Sophal identified the victim as Lin Young Fei, a civil engineer working for a Chinese-owned construction company in Sihanoukville.
He said that on Monday at about 7.30pm, Mr Lin was parking his car in front of a restaurant in the city when a man opened his car door and jumped into the vehicle.
“The victim was opening his car door to get out of the vehicle, but Mr Zhang managed to enter the car,” Maj Sophal said. “Mr Zhang threatened to kill the victim with the knife, while two of the other suspects were on the lookout for police.”
During the incident, Mr Zhang allegedly told the victim to relinquish his valuables, but the victim began screaming for help, causing Mr Zhang to be angry, Maj Sophal said.
The suspect then proceeded to stab the victim multiple times in the chest and neck, causing serious injuries.
Police posted nearby heard the shouts for help and arrested Mr Zhang, while the two accomplices fled the scene.
Mr Zhang was arrested and his knife was confiscated as evidence by police, while the victim was sent to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Brigadier General Kol Phally, chief of the provincial general crimes department, yesterday said Mr Zhang has been accused of attempted murder and could face up to ten years in jail if convicted.
Brig Gen Phally added that Mr Zhang will be sent to the provincial court today.
