Kandal provincial police have arrested three people suspected of raping a woman near a pagoda along the riverside in Koh Thom district.

The attack occurred Sunday evening at about 6.30pm in the district’s Prek Sdey commune.

Major Chuon Sothea, deputy chief of district police, yesterday identified the suspects as Lon Him, a funeral home manager, and his subordinates Chak Nak and Srun Sour, all from the province’s Prey Kabas district.

Maj Sothea said that on Sunday evening at about 6pm, Mr Him asked the victim to drink with him. The victim agreed and Mr Him gave her money to buy beer from a local shop.

After buying the beers, the victim returned to Mr Him and found that he was in the company of Mr Nak and Mr Sour.

Maj Sothea said the four became intoxicated and the three men began sexually assaulting the victim.

“When the victim became drunk, Mr Him held her down and raped her in that forest on riverside,” he said. “After Mr Him raped her, Mr Nak and Mr Sour raped her.”

Maj Sothea added that after the incident, the three suspects fled the scene to the nearby Prey Sdey pagoda and pretended nothing had happened.

However, as soon the incident was over, the victim travelled to the Prek Sdey commune post and filed a suit with police against all three men.

Maj Sothea said the three were then arrested by police at about 7.30pm, in accordance with the victim’s complaint.

Colonel Keo Savoeun, deputy chief of provincial police, yesterday said the three admitted to the offence during questioning on Sunday.

“They confessed to having raped the victim because they were drunk and wanted to have sex with her,” Col Savoeun said. “They regret their mistake.”

He said that the three men will be charged with rape with aggravating circumstances. If found guilty, they could face up to seven years each in prison.

The three suspects are expected to be sent to the provincial court today.
