Event Spotlight: Singapore Art Week

If you think Singapore’s just about luxurious shopping sprees, loud concerts and colourful festivals, you have probably not participated in the annual Singapore Art Week (SAW)!

A celebration of creativity, beauty and diversity, Singapore Art Week returns for its seventh edition with a packed schedule of first-to-launch exhibitions, festivals, art fairs, gallery openings, enriching discussions at various art venues, walking tours and more from 19 to 27 January 2019.

Themed “Art Takes Over”, you can immerse yourself in multisensory experiences across five regions – the Civic District & Marina Bay, Bras Basah & Bugis, Jalan Besar & Little India, Gillman Barracks, and various public Neighbourhoods. 25 events will be spread out across these regions, you will certainly not be short of options!

One of the main highlights is the National Gallery’s “Singapore Light to Night Festival”. An annual art event that celebrates the stunning Civic District of Singapore and brings accessible art to all, it comprises of 2 editions. Firstly, The Art Week Edition (18 – 27 Jan) explores concepts of nature, order and chaos, and is inspired by histories and stories. The Bicentennial Edition (28 Jan -24 Feb) reflects on Singapore’s journey and examines key moments in 700 years of its history. Also taking place at the National Gallery is the “Minimalism. Space. Light. Object.”, the first exhibition on Minimalism in Southeast Asia.

Another flagship SAW event is “Art After Dark”, taking place at Gillman Barracks on 25 Jan, which brings visitors a heady combination of stimulating contemporary art and electrifying live music. Taking place at the same venue, from 24-27 Jan, is “S.E.A. Focus”, a newly launched boutique gallery showcase by 25 leading local and international galleries, within a special pop-up structure. It will feature a diverse range of programmes including performances, talks and art tours.

Of course no SAW experience would be complete without a visit to “ART STAGE Singapore”, taking place from 25-27 Jan at the MBS Convention Centre. The flagship art show of Southeast Asia, it offers centre stage for artists, galleries, curators, museum
