ABUJA (Xinhua) – Morocco’s admission into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) remained pending as it was not on the agenda of the bloc’s just concluded summit in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on Saturday.
It has been expected that leaders at the 54th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS would produce a decision on the country’s admission.
Morocco has applied for a membership ECOWAS after it rejoined African Union in January 2017. Its membership was agreed in principle at the June 2017 summit of ECOWAS held in Liberia’s capital of Monrovia.
A study on the impact of the country’s membership was later carried out and the outcome was submitted to the West African leaders at the 52nd summit in December 2017 in Abuja, where leaders failed to reach a conclusion.
ECOWAS is currently made up of 15 West African nations, none of which shares a border with Morocco, a North African country.
