A police officer working with the Interior Ministry was arrested on Wednesday in Kampong Cham province’s Prey Chhor district for posing with weapons on Facebook and testing positive for drugs.
Major Chuon Sothy, an officer with provincial police’s general crimes department, identified the suspect as Captain Ly Vannak, an officer with the ministry’s investigation department.
Maj Sothy said Cap Vannak was travelling in an SUV to attend a wedding in Kampong Cham.
Upon reaching his destination, Cap Vannak posted a photo on Facebook of himself posing with an assault rifle and a handgun.
Facebook users then criticised Cap Vannak for posting the photo.
The photo was then circulated and shared among other users, prompting police to search his home in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Mon district.
Mr Vannak was arrested on Wednesday at about 10pm in Kampong Cham while he was on his way back to Phnom Penh.
“He was arrested by provincial police Wednesday night in Prey Chhor district while he was driving his Range Rover back to his home in Phnom Penh,” Maj Sothy said. “We confiscated an AK-47 with 30 rounds and one pistol with six bullets.”
“After inspecting him, we found out that the weapons were illegal because he did not have a license to carry them,” he added, noting that Cap Vannak tested positive for drug use.
Major General Em Kosal, provincial police chief, said Cap Vannak is accused of possessing unauthorised weapons and drug use.
Maj Gen Kosal said Cap Vannak remains in police custody and will be sent to court today.
