Eight held for drug use and trafficking

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court yesterday charged seven men and a woman with drug use and trafficking five packages of crystal meth in Sihanoukville on Saturday.

Major Ly Sophath, a provincial anti-drug trafficking department police officer, identified the men as Huoth Sengthai, 30, Phea Kimhuong, 23, Yin Vannda, 17, Yin Chhay Y, 16, Loek Ponnadeth,16, Som Veasna, 15, and Toan Chealou, 15 and the woman as Den Lida, 18.

He said that they are charged with drug use and trafficking and face up to three years in jail each if convicted. The accused are now in prison pending trial.

Maj Sophath said all eight were distributors who often brought drugs for sale to foreign tourists in the province.

He said they were arrested at about 4pm on Saturday after provincial anti-drug police raided their rental house in Buon commune.

“They were arrested on Saturday by our provincial anti-drug trafficking police while they were smoking drugs inside their rental house,” Maj Sophath said. “After their arrests, police seized five small packages of crystal methamphetamine weighing 13.12 grams, two drug scales, three samurai swords, and other drug paraphernalia from them.”

He added that after their arrests, all three tested positive for drugs.
