Government should create more passport offices

PHNOM PENH, (Khmer Times) — Ya Navuth, executive director of Coordination of Action Research on AIDS and Moblility (CARAM) said that the Cambodian government should open passport offices in the provinces.
This would make it easier for the rural population to get their passports, as they would no longer need to “go to the city.”
“The government is preparing many places for passport offices, not only in Phnom Penh,” said Chu Bun Eng, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior. The new offices, in the provinces and near the Thai border should alleviate the problem.
Cambodia only has two passport offices at the moment. One is in Phnom Penh and the other in Battambang province, which makes it hard for potential migrant workers in other provinces to get proper documents.
This appeal is based on information gathered Cambodian workers who worked in Thailand. Ya Navuth noted that Cambodian workers have faced many problems when they worked illegally in Thailand.
