Over one tonne of heroin seized in eastern Turkey

ANKARA (Xinhua) – Turkish police have seized more than one tonne of heroin, in the eastern Turkish province of Erzincan.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s office of Erzincan, the drug was found hidden inside frozen animal fat, in a long-rig trailer truck.

The truck which was on its way from Istanbul to eastern Van province, was intercepted by anti-drug police.

Three suspects, including the driver were detained and are expected to face drug trafficking charges.

In the first nine months of this year, Turkish security forces conducted over 108,105 anti-drug trafficking operations, and seized drugs worth 2.83 billion Turkish lira (US$467 million), Turkish Interior Ministry, said.
