Six-time Metfone C-League champions Phnom Penh Crown have announced the signing of two Brazilian recruits.

The former champions unveiled striker/midfielder Paulo Victor Costa Soares and goalkeeper Leonardo Oliveira Tavares to media and fans at yesterday’s press conference.

“I’m very proud to be here. I decided to come here because I know Crown are a big club and I want to be a champion with Crown, Soares told attendees.

He arrives at the club from South Korean League 2 side Goyang Zaicro while goalkeeper Leonardo counts Flamengo, Botafogo, among his previous clubs.

“It’s not easy to bring top players to Cambodia, explained Crown coach Leonardo Vitorino. “This is only possible when only there is contact between managers and agents of players and clubs.”

“I bring Brazilian players because Brazil is the only national team to go to every World Cup, he explained. “Brazil is the only country that are five time champions in the World Cup. So Brazil are the top country in the world. So Brazil exports the best players to other countries in the world. So we need to follow the best,

“When we talk about basketball we talk about America. When we talk about Cricket, we talk about India. So, in football we talk about Brazil.

“We’re not stopping, we’re only getting started, he added.

Vitorino earlier said he was committed to resurrecting a club which had declined under Englishman Sean Sainsbury.

Under Sainsbury, the six-time champions fell behind to their traditional rivals. Crown spent much of last season scrapping against their mid-table rivals. Calls for Sainsbury’s head came early in his appointment and with increasingly poor performances made his position at the club untenable.
