Poipet city police in Banteay Meanchey province are seeking to arrest a taxi driver who caused a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two men and injured two women yesterday morning.

Chhie Buntha, chief of staff with Poipet city police, said that the traffic accident occurred at about 11am along National Road 5, where a taxi and truck collided head-on.

Mr Buntha said four people were in the taxi which was travelling from west to east as the truck was approaching in the opposite direction.

“The four people who were in the taxi were likely on their way home in a hired taxi from doctor appointments in Thailand,” he said. “The taxi driver was driving very fast and he tried to overtake a truck in front of him, crossing into the oncoming lane as the other truck came and leading to a head-on collision.”

Mr Buntha said the collision left the taxi car crushed and spun it off the road into a ditch.

He added that two men died at the scene and two women were sent to the provincial hospital.

“We are seeking to arrest both drivers who fled the scene of the crash,” he said. “Eyewitness told us that the taxi driver got slightly injured and ran away.”

Mr Buntha said it took nearly all afternoon to process the scene and remove the vehicles, adding that police can now focus on tracking the drivers.

In a separate crash, four people were injured in Preah Sihanouk province’s Prey Nob district yesterday morning when a car and truck collided.
