Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng has restricted the travel of large vehicles and taxis operating on main roads during the upcoming Water Festival in a bid to reduce traffic in the capital.

Mr Sreng over the weekend informed construction site owners that their container trucks, cement trucks and other heavy construction vehicles will not be allowed within the city centre for five days.

“From Tuesday until Saturday, we will not allow large trucks, cement mixers and other trucks from operating in the city,” he said. “Construction operations located in the city will also be suspended.”

He added that tuk-tuks and taxis will also be prohibited from operating on main roads used for the festival in the capital between 10am and 10pm.

Mr Sreng has ordered municipal officials to disseminate the information in the upcoming days before the festival.

City Hall officials last week said 12,754 security forces will be deployed to ensure public order and provide safety during the festival.
