City Hall has created a committee and five subcommittees to organise this year’s Water Festival in November as residents in outlying provinces prepare their boats for this year’s race in the capital.

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng on Monday held a meeting with 12 district governors to create a recurring committee to prepare, organise and manage the annual festival.

“City Hall has also decided to create five other subcommittees in order to assist the main committee in charge of organising the Water Festival and other events,” he said, adding that one of the subcommittees will manage the boat races.

Mr Sreng said the subcommittee for boat racing will prepare water channels, electricity, toilets, and compile a report for the main committee to review, while a second subcommittee will be responsible for security, social order, traffic, and safety.

“They have to provide good security and safety for the public. They must also ensure order, manage traffic and prepare for emergencies during the festival,” he said. “As for the third subcommittee, it is in charge of support equipment and managing the budget for the event.”

Mr Sreng noted that the other three subcommittees are responsible for media coverage, decorations and a stage for live performances.

“They have to work with the National Committee for Organising National and International Festivals,” he said. “The committees will consist of City Hall officials, police officers, military police officers, department directors and other stakeholders.”

The provinces of Kandal and Battambang began boat racing qualifiers this week. Finalists will be selected to race in the main event in Phnom Penh.

Held over three days, last year’s festival in the capital attracted more than 1.3 million visitors. About 270 boats, along with their 17,826 rowers, participated in the races.
