City Hall said on Wednesday that it has readied more than 200 buses offering free rides from the capital to 17 provinces across the Kingdom for Pchum Ben.

A City Hall statement said that Prime Minister Hun Sen instructed it to provide free bus rides as a service to armed forces servicemen, civil servants, workers and the general public.

It noted that people can travel for free from Phnom Penh to provinces along National Roads 1 to 8.

City Hall said it will use 95 city buses to serve the public in Phnom Penh and 120 buses for travel to the provinces, noting that the free service will run from Monday to Wednesday.

The statement also said round-trip bus services to provinces for the Pchum Ben holiday will be available from Saturday to Thursday and the buses will start operating at 5.30am daily.

City Hall spokesman Met Meas Pheakdey said yesterday that the service will help reduce expenses for people travelling to reunite with families and visit pagodas.

“We are well prepared to provide the free service,” he said, noting that the bus trips will be comfortable.

Mr Meas Pheakdey said City Hall expects many people to take advantage of the free bus rides.

“We expect our brothers and sisters in the city to be happy with our service just as they were with a similar service for New Year,” he added.

In April, City Hall prepared 60 buses to help facilitate the travel of people during Khmer New Year.
