Boosting Cambodia’s STEM curriculum

Cambodia’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) discipline has continuously improved through the years. But it still has a long way to go in terms of mastery and application in the field.

To boost the education system, officials from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, British Embassy in Phnom Penh, school management committees, principals and school representatives attended that STEM Educator Workshop at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Center on September 27th.

Co-organised by Smart Axiata and Kids City, the workshop was held to raise awareness and promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics to the 200 participants whose professions are in the education field. The event focused on the theme “Dissemination and promotion of STEM Education: Inspiring Cambodian youth to seek meaningful STEM careers.”

H.E. Ton Sa Im, Under Secretary of State of the MoEYS, Mr Cashel Gleeson, Deputy Head of Mission of British Embassy in Phnom Penh, Ms Eng Phearith, Talent Acquisition Specialist, Dr Moung Phasy, Vice President in Charge of Academic Affairs, and other school administrators and officials actively participated in the workshop.

The participants also held a tour at the Kids City and saw for themselves how academics and fun can be done simultaneously and how education can be inculcated in more enjoyable, more interesting and more creative ways.

Mr Hieng Meng, Kids City CEO, said “Taking this opportunity, I would like to inform that Kids City Center welcomes all ideas from both national and international teams to create new innovations to promote the STEM education in Cambodia”

“Moreover, because of the limited technical equipment in public schools, teachers have a hard time to impose to students the STEM education or careers. Kids City Center also has over 100 modern scientific devices for students to study to help them get to know more about scientific and technical fields,” he noted.

Mr Gleeson from the British Embassy, also shared, “to foster country development, Cambodia needs more human resource in STEM professions, especially in the technical field.”

“To promote the STEM professions in Cambodia, we need to raise awareness and encourage students to find STEM professions they are interested in and everyone here has a key role to guarantee that STEM subjects will improve in the context of Cambodian education.”

There was also an exhibition about STEM projects and a thorough discussion on the STEM impacts to learning in the classroom and STEM career choices.
