Cambodian embassies have recently repatriated 55 Cambodian nationals who went to China, Malaysia and Vietnam to find work illegally or were duped into forced marriages.

Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Ket Sophann yesterday said that the embassy in China repatriated two women who were duped into forced marriages and noted they were reunited with their families last Sunday.

He said that 22 Cambodians who worked illegally in Malaysia were also rescued and sent back to their homes earlier this month.

“The 22 workers are from Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Takeo, Tboung Khmum, Battambang, Pursat, Preah Vihear and Svay Rieng provinces,” Mr Sophann said. “Cambodian embassy officials cooperated with the Malaysian authorities to rescue them from the employers and return them home safely.”

He noted that in another case, 31 Cambodians, including 23 children, were repatriated on September 14 from Vietnam after they crossed the border illegally to sell lottery tickets.

“The 31 live in Svay Rieng province, and they crossed the border to live and sell lottery tickets illegally in Vietnam,” Mr Sophann said.

Our embassy in Ho Chi Minh city worked with the Vietnamese authorities to round them up and repatriate them to their homes in the province.

Pen Sovanny, deputy director of the Svay Rieng department of social affairs, said yesterday that the 31 were sent back to their homes in Chantrea district and Kampong Ror district.

Mr Sovanny added that the number of people from Svay Rieng province who cross the border to sell lotteries in Vietnam has dropped compared to last year.
