The number of dengue fever cases in the first half of the year increased by more than 200 percent when compared to the same period last year, a report from the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control shows.
The report said there were 5,284 dengue fever cases in the first six months of 2018, leading to ten deaths.
“The cases of dengue fever in 2018 is higher than last year by more than 200 percent,” said Huy Rekol, director of the centre. “There were 1,590 cases in the first six months of 2017.”
“Ten people were killed by dengue fever in 2018, which is up from just one person in the first half of last year,” he added.
The report added that more than 71 percent of dengue fever patients this year were children aged between five to 14-years-old.
The report noted that the data was gleaned from reports filed by observers, who visited the hospital and conducted interviews with parents of sick children, who were often taken to get treatment too late.
“Some of the parents of the children are still lacking an understanding of dengue fever,” the report said.
Kim Sourphirun, director of the Kampong Cham provincial health department, said yesterday that dengue fever in his province has increased this year.
“The cases of dengue fever in Kampong Cham province so far this year increased compared to last year, but no one died here,” he said.
He said health officials have educated people in the province so that they know how to protect themselves.
“Although the cases of dengue increased, we can control it,” he said. “I want to send a message to everyone to take steps to avoid the illness, and if you have a suspicion that you are infected, do not delay going to the hospital.”
Meanwhile, the centre has introduced measures to prevent an outbreak of dengue fever in 2018 after the Health Ministry warned earlier this year that dengue fever cases could spike.
The CNM has prepared more than 350 tonnes of the larvicide BTI and more than 5,690 litres of insecticide throughout the country.
There were 6,372 cases of dengue fever in Cambodia in 2017. In 2016, there were 12,843 cases with 18 deaths.
Dengue fever outbreaks usually occur every five to six years.
