The National Election Committee yesterday said that local and international observers have until the end of December to register their credentials with the NEC in order to monitor the registration of new voters this year.

NEC spokesman Hang Puthea said that about 500,000 newly-eligible voters are expected to be registered this year.

Mr Puthea said that local and international observers will have the opportunity to monitor the process.

“Voter registration process begins on October 1 until 18. We estimate that about 500,000 people will register,” Mr Puthea said.

The NEC in a statement said that local observers have until December 21, while international observers have until December 28 to register.

It noted that political parties who wish to observe have between September 24 until December 21 to apply, adding that all political parties have the right to send their observers to monitor the registration process in communes across the country.

The NEC said that if approved, observers would have the right to observe and review voter registration.

“The NEC hopes that all national and international observers will pay attention to how to cooperate effectively,” it said.

Mr Puthea said the names of those eligible to vote will be published at the end of this year.
