Siem Reap Provincial Court yesterday charged a 26-year-old woman for allegedly viciously hacking her estranged husband dead over jealousy of another woman.

The gruesome murder took place at about 12.30pm on Tuesday in Siem Reap city.

Brigadier General Phoeng Chendarithy, deputy provincial police chief, identified the accused as Sok Liny, who lived in Thlouk Andoung village.

Brig Gen Chendarithy said that the court has charged her with murder and she faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

He added that Ms Liny was arrested on Wednesday after she killed her husband, Lieutenant Him Vannaro, a Kork Chak commune police officer.

Colonel Nuon Sakchamroeunrith, deputy police chief of Siem Reap city, said that on the night of the murder, Ms Liny accused her husband of having a mistress after picking up the couple’s three-year-old son from hospital. The couple had been separated for months and the accused contacted the victim to pick up their son.

During the ride home from hospital, Ms Liny asked the victim if they could resume their relationship, but the victim refused.

After dropping off their son, the couple had an argument as the victim was attempting to leave.

“She became angry at her estranged husband for not taking care of their son and never staying at home,” Col Sakchamroeunrith said. “She took out a knife and hacked the victim, causing fatal injuries to his stomach and back as he bled out at the scene.”

“After killing the victim, she fled with her son and pretended to know nothing about the incident,” he added.

Col Sakchamroeunrith noted that the victim’s body was later found by villagers at about 5am. Villagers called police and the accused was arrested the next day, when police found blood on her clothes.
