PHNOM PENH,  July 30, 2014 (Khmer Times) — The two major political parties — the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) —  have not yet announced who the new members of the National Election Committee (NEC) will be.

Cheang Vun, elected-lawmaker of the CPP couldn’t clarify who will be nominated by ruling party to be NEC member.

He only said that “I don’t know who will be a member of NEC, and I am very busy with the amendments to the internal regulation of the National Assembly.”

Yim Sovann, elected-lawmaker of CNRP said, “Now we are considering which three people will be members of the NEC.  Kouy Bunroeun is already officially nominated. Before we nominate them, we must discuss who can do it, examining experience, ability, and electoral expertise. Of major importance is that we first need time to amend our constitutional law and the by-laws of the National Assembly.”

Yesterday, Dr. Kek Galabru, president of the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (LICADHO) formally accepted the bi-partisan nomination as one of the nine members of the NEC. In 1980s, she played a key role in the negotiations between Hun Sen and the late king Sihanouk to find peace in Cambodia — after three decades of civil war.
