Kampot provincial police are seeking to identify and arrest a group of soldiers after a woman was injured by a stray bullet as they held a drunken shooting competition on a mango farm in Toek Chhou district police on Saturday.

Major General Mao Chanmakthurith, chief of Kampot provincial police, said ten soldiers were drunk and fired multiple bullets from a hill, leaving one woman seriously injured in Trapaing Pring commune.

The identities of the men are still unknown, but Maj Gen Chanmakthurith said that the men were not from a local unit.

“So far, we have not arrested them or figured out their identities,” Maj Gen Chanmakthurith said. “We know they were soldiers, but they did not belong to a local unit operating in Kampot province.”

Captain Chhun Chhoeun, chief of staff for Toek Chhou district police, said that on Saturday a group of ten soldiers in four cars drove to a mango farm belonging to one of the men at the foot of a hill in Trapaing Pring commune.

Cap Chhoeun said that they were drinking heavily at about 6pm.

“While they were drunk, they all started firing at the foot of the hill to show who was the best shooter,” he said. “Each soldier was given two to four bullets to fire.”

He said that the ten soldiers managed to fire a total of 48 shots, including 37 from a pistol and one bullet from an automatic rifle.

The competition led to a stray bullet injuring Sam Ounh, 48, who was hit by a bullet on her left heel.

She has since been hospitalised at the provincial referral hospital where she is recovering.

Cap Chhoeun said that the soldiers fled the scene shortly after the woman got hit by the bullet.
