Phnom Penh was inundated on Monday evening as a heavy thunderstorm, lasting more than an hour, lashed the city. Flood waters reached waist-high at parts of Riverside and traffic came to a standstill in most parts of the city.
Many commuters, travelling home after work had to wade through knee-deep water.
The Water Resources Ministry cautioned early this month that most provinces could face floods due to low-pressure conditions which can cause heavy rain throughout regions across the country.
Last month Prime Minister Hun Sen appealed to all authorities to brace for incoming floods and prepare to help villagers in their time of need. He said that this year’s weather forecasts predicted there will be heavy flooding throughout the country.
