Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday that Cambodian customs unit will have helicopters equipped with weapons to stamp out smuggling.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Sihanoukville port multi-purpose terminal on Monday, Mr Hun Sen said that customs unit charged with cracking down on smuggling could not be privatised.

“Now we have customs’ ship to patrol and we will have helicopters equipped with weapons to fight smugglers in the future,” Mr Hun Sen said.

He said that in 2006 foreign private companies pressured him to have customs unit privatised, but he refused to do so.

“Customs earned $200 million of income per month and at that time if we privatised it, we earned $100 million and other $100 million could go to private companies abroad,” Mr Hun Sen said.

“Selling the customs amounts to selling a national sovereignty,” he said.
