A 34 -year-old farmer and alleged sorcerer was shot and seriously injured as he sat in front of his house in Preah Vihear province on the Cambodian-Thai border.
Se Savuth, who has a wife and two children, was shot five times in Choam Sre village in Yeang commune.
Veng Sakhon, deputy chief of Yeang commune police, said that according to the victim and the police investigation, on the night of the attempted murder, Mr Savuth was sitting alone smoking a cigarette in front of his house while his wife and children were watching TV inside.
An unidentified man with a homemade gun walked towards him.
“The suspect took the gun and fired five bullets at him, seriously wounding him on the hands, neck and the left of his jaw, ” Mr Sakhon said.
“After shooting the victim, the man fled with the gun into the jungle.”
After hearing the shooting, the victim’s wife came out of the house and saw the victim. She shouted loudly for help.
“The neighbours arrived and immediately reported it to the local police.
Choam Ksan district police chief Dam Yin said that according to the police investigations, the attack was sparked by rancour between the victim and the suspect.
He said Mr Savuth had been accused by villagers of being a sorcerer who used magic on many villagers.
In 2017, the father of the victim was shot dead by a gunman after being accused of sorcery by villagers.
“Maybe the suspect tried to kill Mr Savuth because he has been accused by villagers of being a sorcerer,” he said.
