An 18-year-old man was charged yesterday by Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court with using a machete to hack the hand of another man in a jealous rage.
High school student Theav Y, of Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet city, was arrested yesterday and charged with an intentional act of violence. He faces up to five years in jail if convicted.
Captain Yong An, a Poipet city police officer, identified the victim as Khon Syche, 27, a construction worker from Kbal Spean I village.
On Tuesday afternoon, Mr Syche, who had been wooing the accused’s 16-year-old girlfriend, followed her and talked to her as she walked.
Mr Y, who lived in the same village, saw them and became very angry. He took a machete and hacked the victim, trying to kill him. The victim suffered serious injuries.
“He was jealous over the girlfriend,” Mr An said. “He was angry at the victim for wooing her. He then took the machete and hacked the victim. The victim raised his left hand to protect himself. The machete caused serious damage to his hand.”
The accused fled but local police arrested him later in the village, he added.
The victim is being treated at the provincial referral hospital.
